I ever spent. But read the manual if you don't understand channels or radio traffic. It's an easy read.. but well worth the money!!
There are a lot of one-star or two-star reviews here, which I believe are unwarranted, as long as you understand the fundamental limitations of FRS handheld radios: The FCC limits transmit power to .5W for channels 8-14, and limits power to 2W for channels 1-7 and 15-22. The handheld radios also must have a permanently-attached antenna and no numeric keypad. The maximum range values quoted are theoretical, and, just like WiFi, rarely reach these maximum limits. These radios operate on UHF, which is line-of-sight and limited by obstructions, including buildings, foliage, etc. The fixed-length, non-removable antenna requirement means that a longer antenna can't be installed for more range. The lack of a FCC license requirement means any fool can use them, and so there may be endless jibber-jabber on-air. These are essentially the "CB" radios of today.
Again, these are all FCC regulations, and all US FRS radios, regardless of brand, have the same limitations.
This means: these radios are great for their intended purpose: short range, family/friend communications. They are not intended for commercial use, will they have very poor range if used inside a vehicle.
Battery life complaints: the rechargeable NiMH battery pack is, indeed, inadequate, with a low mAH capacity. The better solution is to either use alkaline AA batteries (e.g. Duracell or Energizer), or use higher-capacity NiMH AA batteries, such as Panasonic Eneloop. The internal battery charger will charge Eneloop batteries, albeit slowly, if a "hack" is added to connect the middle battery to the adjacent batteries, while also insulating the radio's corresponding battery terminals, or you can keep spares in an external charger.
I found the construction to be reasonably solid, and likely to survive drops from shoulder-height.
I purchased mine for use with our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and it worked fine for that purpose, during testing.
If greater range, via higher power and repeater stations is desired, get an Amateur Radio (ham) license and use ham radio equipment. If you need more powerful radios for business use, VHF/UHF business-class radios using licensed frequencies are a better solution.
The battery is fairly convenient, though we made the mistake of removing part of the plastic wrapper. The result was that it got completely discharged when installed in the walkie talkie and so I have to buy a new battery pack. This was "my fault" and we are able to use the radio with 3 AA batteries, so it isn't too much of a problem in the short term.
This radio might not be what is needed for business or professional use but it certainly seems perfect for family emergency preparedness.
Note: It does have a headphone jack, but it is sized for a smaller pin (I think this is called one-pin). My only recommendation would be to make this a standard jack. I know companies like to have custom interfaces to sell more stuff, but I think it is a good feature to have standard interfaces (typical headphone jack).
Also * ONLY ONE PER PACKAGE * we had to go back and order a second one
